Hand in Hand Confronting Cancer

De la Mano Frente al Cancer is a collaboration between a Latino community based organization, Familias en Acción, and cancer organizations to enhance access to cancer care and support services through funding made possible by the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The population to be served will be Latinos in Oregon who represent 11% of the population. De la Mano Frente al Cancer will support the development of cancer support services for a population that has limited or no access to existing services.

Three important components of the program are:
1. Outreach to Latino adolescents and young adults,
2. Holistic approach to cancer support with an emphasis on spirituality; and
3. Creating access to cancer treatment for uninsured patients of safety net clinics

The program includes:
· Patient navigator services targeted for Latino cancer survivors and their families.
· Holistic Latino culturally specific and family centered cancer support.
· Culturally specific cancer information and community based peer support.

Other program components include community based cancer education providing outreach to survivors who are not currently receiving treatment and quarterly presentations for health professionals. The quarterly presentations focus on "culture and cancer" with the goal of enhancing health professional competency in providing culturally responsive cancer care for Latinos.
